Fort Mill and Tega Cay are situated close together, southwest of Charlotte, North Carolina,
at the North Carolina and South Carolina border. Fort Mill, established in 1873, is home to approximately 35,000 people in the Town and Township. It takes
its name from the nearby area of Charlotte, known as Steele Creek’s Grist Mill. Home
to the Catawba Indians for
many years,
they welcomed Thomas Spratt and his
family as the first
settlers in
the mid
1700’s. Fort Mill
grew rapidly
in the
1800’s as textile
mills were established.
Tega Cay is a planned community of nearly 4000 residents. It is situated west of
Fort Mill
on over three square miles of
Lake Wylie
peninsula, and is filled with recreational facilities. Its
hilly terrain is densely forested with
the Carolina pines
seen throughout both states.
The two towns have a wonderful relationship. Students in Fort Mill and Tega Cay attend Fort Mill schools, which are considered the best in the state and residents of the communities have wholly adopted the spirit of friendliness and hospitality of its original residents.
